GTA 6 Fuel System: Rockstar Knows Fans Might Hate It
Imagine you’re escaping a robbery in GTA 6, the cops are right behind you, and the car you’ve just stolen is almost out of fuel.
Well, GTA 6 might actually make you deal with it.
Rockstar is keeping its controversial vehicle refueling system, and the studio already seems to know that some players might not be happy about it. During a recent GTA 6 preview, content creator TGG got to see the system in action – and Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson even asked what players might think of it.
So, how does GTA 6’s fuel system work, and is it really going to be annoying?
Getting chased by the cops is stressful. Getting chased with 2% fuel left? That’s personal. 😂
GTA 6 Fuel System: What We Know
According to TGG’s hands-on preview, gas stations in GTA 6 can be used to refuel and repair vehicles. Electric vehicles can also be recharged, according to the preview.
Refueling isn’t simply an instant button press. Selecting the option triggers a short interaction, which TGG estimates takes around 10 seconds.
That’s a pretty small amount of time – but the situation you’re in could make those 10 seconds feel very different.
Why Are GTA 6 Fans Worried About Fuel?
The fuel system isn’t exactly a surprise.
A fuel gauge had already appeared in earlier leaked GTA 6 footage, and fans have been debating whether Rockstar would actually keep the mechanic in the final game.
Now we know it hasn’t been dropped.
The concern is pretty straightforward: will stopping for fuel interrupt the fast-paced chaos that makes GTA fun?
Nobody wants to be halfway through a police chase and suddenly have the game tell them it’s time for a gas station.
But there’s another side to it.
Rockstar Thinks Refueling Is Fast Enough
During the preview, Rob Nelson acknowledged that Rockstar doesn’t know yet how players will react to the feature.
When TGG discussed the mechanic with him, Nelson reportedly responded with:
“We’ll see what people say.”
After seeing the refueling process, however, Nelson pointed out how quickly it happens, describing it as a pretty fast fill-up and suggesting that players wouldn’t have much reason to complain about it.
And TGG’s own impression is fairly positive.
He believes fuel shouldn’t become a major problem unless players simply aren’t paying attention to their vehicle.
There is, however, one particularly GTA-style situation where it could become hilarious.
Imagine Stealing a Car With Almost No Fuel
Picture this.
You just robbed a store. Police are after you. You ditch your damaged car, grab another vehicle and start driving.
Then you realize the new car is nearly empty.
Now you have a choice:
Find a gas station – or risk running out of fuel while the cops are still chasing you.
That’s where the mechanic could actually become fun.
Instead of being another annoying survival-style system, fuel could occasionally create unexpected problems that players have to deal with on the fly.
And that’s very GTA.
KarmaVerse Verdict - GTA 6 Fuel System
Honestly, we’re not completely against it. If refueling really takes around ten seconds, it shouldn’t become a major hassle.
Whether it becomes annoying or adds more chaos will depend on how often you actually need to refuel.
And let’s be honest – running out of fuel at the worst possible moment while escaping the cops sounds like exactly the kind of stupid chaos we’ll probably end up laughing about later. 😂
