GTA 6 Map Size: How Big Is It Compared to GTA 5?
For years, GTA fans had the same question: How big is the GTA 6 map size actually going to be?
We knew GTA 6 wasn’t stopping at Vice City. Rockstar had already made it clear that the game takes place across the wider state of Leonida, with Vice City at its center. But there was no official square-kilometre number to settle the argument.
That changed in August 2026.
After visiting Rockstar North for an early look at GTA 6, YouTuber TGG reported that Rockstar development head Rob Nelson described the map as roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s map and around three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2. TGG also reported that Vice City itself is about twice the size of Los Santos.
Those numbers sound ridiculous.
But there’s an important catch:
Rockstar still hasn’t published an official GTA 6 map size in square kilometres or square miles.
So how big is GTA 6?
Let’s separate what we actually know from the numbers the internet has calculated.
Gamer’s Take: Rockstar finally gave us a size comparison, and naturally the next question became, “Okay, but how many pixels is that?” 😂
GTA 6 Map Size: The Quick Answer
Here’s the most reliable answer right now:
| Comparison | Reported scale |
|---|---|
| GTA 6 vs GTA 5 | ~2× larger |
| GTA 6 vs RDR2 | ~3× the playable area |
| Vice City vs Los Santos | ~2× larger |
| Vice City + surrounding suburbs vs Los Santos + surroundings | ~11× |
| Official GTA 6 size in km² | Not published |
| Official GTA 6 size in square miles | Not published |
The key word here is comparison.
These figures tell us how Rockstar reportedly compares the game’s scale with previous worlds. They do not give us an official measurement like “GTA 6 is exactly 150 km².”
That’s an important distinction because most precise GTA 6 measurements currently circulating online are community-derived.
How Big Is the GTA 6 Map Size Compared to GTA 5?
The headline answer is:
GTA 6 is roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s map.
That figure comes from TGG’s Rockstar North preview, where he reported that Rob Nelson described GTA 6’s map as twice the size of GTA 5’s and three times the playable area of RDR2. Multiple outlets subsequently reported those comparisons.
But twice the size doesn’t automatically tell us the exact number of square kilometres.
Why?
Because map measurements can be calculated in different ways.
One measurement might include water.
Another might count only land.
Another might use the full playable boundary.
So even if everyone agrees on the 2× comparison, they can still produce different km² calculations depending on what they’re measuring.
That’s exactly what we’re seeing with GTA 6.
So, How Many km² Is the GTA 6 Map?
Rockstar has not published an official GTA 6 map size in square kilometres or square miles.
Community projects have tried to estimate it, though.
GTATracker currently lists a GTA 6 community-map land estimate ranging from roughly 83.2 km² to 125 km², depending on the map and methodology being used. It also shows what a simple 2× calculation would produce when applied to different measurements of GTA 5.
For example:
- GTA 5 measured at about 75.84 km² including water
- A simple 2× calculation = 151.68 km²
- GTA 5 land-only figure of about 48.15 km²
- A simple 2× calculation = 96.30 km²
But those GTA 6 numbers are derived calculations, not official Rockstar measurements.
So don’t write:
❌ “Rockstar confirmed GTA 6 is 151.68 km².”
The accurate version is:
✅ “Rockstar reportedly described GTA 6 as roughly twice the size of GTA 5, while exact square-kilometre measurements remain unofficial.”
That’s the distinction that most map-size articles skip.
GTA 6 Map Size vs GTA 5: The Bigger Difference Isn't Just the Number
There’s another reason the 2× comparison can be misleading.
GTA 5 is dominated by Los Santos and Blaine County.
GTA 6 is being built around a much broader state.
Rockstar officially describes GTA 6 as taking place in Leonida, with Vice City at its center and a wider story stretching across the state. Rockstar’s GTA 6 Extended Look also gave us a closer look at the wider Leonida setting, showing environments far beyond Vice City’s urban core.
So you’re not simply getting:
Los Santos → bigger Los Santos
You’re getting:
Vice City → coastal areas → Keys → wetlands → rural environments → wilderness
That changes what the map actually represents.
It’s a larger world, but it’s also a more geographically varied one.
And that’s probably more important than the raw number.
Is Vice City Twice the Size of Los Santos?
According to TGG’s report from the Rockstar North preview, yes – Vice City itself is roughly twice the size of Los Santos.
That’s already a huge comparison.
But there’s another figure that needs careful wording.
TGG also reported that Vice City and its surrounding suburbs are around 11 times the size of Los Santos and its surrounding suburbs.
That does not mean:
“The entire GTA 6 map is 11× bigger than GTA 5.”
It doesn’t.
The comparison is specifically between:
Vice City + surrounding suburbs
and
Los Santos + surrounding areas.
The broader GTA 6 world is still described separately as roughly 2× the size of GTA 5 overall.
That distinction matters.
GTA 6 Map Size vs Red Dead Redemption 2
The other major figure is even more surprising:
GTA 6 is reportedly around three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2.
Again, this comes from TGG’s reported Rockstar North information rather than a Rockstar-published square-kilometre measurement.
And there’s a reason I wouldn’t convert that into a fake exact number.
Even maps of older Rockstar games have been measured differently depending on what counts as playable territory.
So:
3× RDR2 is useful as a scale comparison.
3× some specific RDR2 km² estimate is not automatically an official GTA 6 measurement.
The ratio tells us how large Rockstar considers the world relative to an existing game.
It doesn’t give us a surveyor’s report.
Why Are GTA 6 Map Size Estimates All Over the Place?
This is where the investigation gets interesting.
You can find GTA 6 measurements online that don’t agree with each other.
That’s not necessarily because everyone is terrible at maths.
The problem is that they’re often measuring different versions of the map in different ways.
GTATracker, for example, currently documents community-based estimates ranging from around 83.2 km² to 125 km² of land, alongside the much broader calculations produced from the reported 2× GTA 5 comparison.
Another analysis of the available figures points out that the commonly cited GTA 5 and RDR2 measurements themselves depend on what is being counted, which makes direct multiplication less clean than it looks.
That’s why a precise number can actually be less trustworthy than a simple comparison.
If someone tells you:
“GTA 6 is exactly 118.4 km².”
the obvious follow-up should be:
Measured how?
Does the GTA 6 Map Leak Reveal the Exact Size?
Not definitively.
Community researchers have measured GTA 6 map leak material and produced their own estimates, but those figures are still unofficial.
GTATracker currently shows one community-derived land estimate of roughly 83.2 km², while another mapping approach reaches around 125 km².
That’s a pretty large gap.
And that tells us something important:
A leaked map can help with comparison without giving us the final official area.
A development build can change.
A map image can omit information.
A community reconstruction can use different boundaries.
And without an official scale or methodology from Rockstar, there’s no responsible way to turn every fan measurement into “the final GTA 6 size.”
So treat those figures as estimates, not settled facts.
Why GTA 6 Could Feel Bigger Than GTA 5
Here’s the question I’d actually rather answer.
Will GTA 6 feel twice as big?
Because a larger map isn’t automatically a better map.
Rockstar’s official GTA VI material already shows a world that extends far beyond Vice City’s urban core, covering different types of environments across Leonida.
That means travelling across the map could involve much stronger environmental changes than simply moving from one part of Los Santos to another.
And Vice City itself is reportedly around twice the size of Los Santos.
So even before you leave the city, GTA 6 should have a much larger urban environment to work with.
But here’s the real test:
Does Rockstar give players a reason to explore all that space?
Because 100 km² of interesting world is better than 200 km² of roads you only use to reach your next mission.
KarmaVerse Verdict: GTA 6 Is Huge - But Size Alone Won't Matter
The numbers are impressive.
~2× GTA 5.
~3× RDR2’s playable area.
~2× Los Santos just for Vice City.
But the most interesting part isn’t the size.
It’s what Rockstar does with it.
Leonida isn’t just a bigger version of GTA 5’s formula. It’s a broader world built around Vice City, coastal areas, the Keys, wetlands, rural environments and wilderness.
So yes, GTA 6 looks massive.
But the real victory would be making all that space worth getting lost in.
Rockstar gave us a whole state. Good luck getting anything done. 😂
