GTA 6 Extended Look: 7 Things Rockstar Just Revealed About the Game
I watched the GTA 6 Extended Look expecting one thing: better graphics.
I came away thinking about something else.
“How much of this world can I actually mess with?”
That’s what makes Rockstar’s latest 26-minute showcase interesting. It wasn’t just cutscenes or cinematic shots. Rockstar mixed actual gameplay with story scenes and showed systems we hadn’t seen properly before.
And after going through the footage again, these are the 7 details that stood out to me most.
1. Jason and Lucia Feel Like a Team, Not Just Two Characters
GTA V gave us three protagonists.
GTA 6 feels different.
Jason and Lucia aren’t simply two characters you can switch between. Their relationship appears to be one of the things holding the entire story together.
Rockstar’s own description says the two are forced to rely on each other after a job goes wrong and pulls them into a criminal conspiracy across Leonida.
What I liked in the footage is that their relationship doesn’t feel completely polished.
They joke. They argue. They work together. Sometimes one takes the lead while the other supports them.
And you can switch between them during certain parts of the game, including action sequences. Outside missions, Rockstar has also confirmed that players will have freedom to switch between Jason and Lucia.
That could make the story feel much more personal than GTA V.
2. Vice City Looks Like Somewhere You Could Actually Get Lost
We’ve already seen Vice City.
What we hadn’t really seen was how much there is to do around it.
The Extended Look moved beyond the familiar neon streets and showed beaches, waterways and the wider Leonida setting. Activities include things like kayaking, scuba diving, fan boating, dirt biking and more.
And this is where GTA 6 starts looking dangerous for my free time.
Because I know exactly what will happen.
I’ll start a mission.
I’ll see something interesting on the way.
I’ll stop.
Twenty minutes later, I’m nowhere near the mission anymore.
That’s when an open world is doing its job.
3. Getting Caught Could Finally Be More Interesting
The wanted system has always been fun, but it has also been pretty simple.
You commit a crime.
Police see you.
Stars appear.
Chaos begins.
GTA 6 appears to be adding another layer: the Criminal Profile, which works alongside the traditional Wanted Level.
According to Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson, the system takes some inspiration from Red Dead Redemption 2’s Honor system. Your behaviour can influence how the world responds, rather than every crime simply being treated as the same thing.
The footage also showed disguises and situations where Jason and Lucia try to avoid being identified.
That changes the fun.
Instead of always asking:
“Can I escape the police?”
You might sometimes be asking:
“Can I make sure they don’t know it was me?”
That’s a much more interesting problem.
4. NPCs Might Finally Feel Like People
This is one of those improvements you won’t fully appreciate from a trailer.
But the GTA 6 Extended Look gives us a much better idea of what’s happening in the background.
People are exercising. Using phones. Riding scooters. Hanging around different locations. Reacting to what’s happening.
Rockstar has reportedly even dedicated a studio team specifically to pedestrian behaviour.
The important part isn’t that NPCs can do more things.
It’s that their behaviour can make the world feel less predictable.
Rockstar has also shown more varied reactions when players interact with people, rather than everyone simply running away when a gun comes out.
And honestly, that’s exactly what GTA needs.
If I start a fight in the middle of a street, I don’t want every NPC to behave like the same three lines of code.
I want the situation to get messy.
5. Combat Looks More Physical
The shooting itself isn’t the only thing that caught my attention.
Movement, melee animations and character reactions all look more grounded than what we had in GTA V.
The more physical movement also makes the GTA 6 DualSense controller feel especially interesting for PS5 players.
The Extended Look also showed Jason and Lucia working together during action sequences — including situations where one drives while the other shoots.
There are also moments where the game switches between the two characters during ongoing action.
That could make missions feel less predictable.
But there’s an important caveat here: some of these sequences are clearly designed around specific missions, so we shouldn’t assume every character switch or action can happen freely everywhere.
The footage shows the possibility. The full game will tell us how deep it actually goes.
And that’s the difference between hype and a fair review.
6. The Side Activities Could Become the Real Time Killer
Here’s something I think people might underestimate.
GTA 6 isn’t just giving you a bigger story.
It’s giving you more reasons to forget the story exists.
The footage showed activities and distractions across Leonida, including water sports, dirt biking, scuba diving, basketball, working out and other ways to spend time away from missions.
We’ve seen this before in GTA.
But the difference is scale and detail.
The more systems Rockstar puts into the world, the more chances there are for unexpected situations to happen.
And that’s where GTA has always been at its best.
You don’t remember the 40-minute mission exactly as Rockstar designed it.
You remember the stupid thing that happened on the way there.
7. Rockstar Still Isn't Showing Us Everything
This might actually be my favourite part.
One thing the latest GTA 6 Extended Look makes clear is that Rockstar is still keeping plenty of the game under wraps.
We still don’t know when the game could arrive on PC – here’s what we know about the GTA 6 PC release date
After 26 minutes of footage, we still have plenty of questions.
How deep does the Criminal Profile system go?
How much can NPCs actually remember?
How flexible are the character switches?
How much freedom do we have with disguises?
And how often will these systems interact with each other during normal free-roam?
Those questions matter more than another screenshot of Vice City looking pretty.
Because Rockstar can show us a perfect gameplay sequence.
It can’t show us the random story we’ll create ourselves.
That’s something we’ll only understand after actually playing.
Is the GTA 6 Extended Look Worth the Hype?
For me, yes — but not because of the graphics.
The graphics were always going to be impressive.
What interested me more was the number of smaller systems working underneath the game.
Jason and Lucia’s relationship.
The Criminal Profile.
More reactive NPCs.
Disguises.
Character switching.
Side activities.
A world that seems designed to keep doing things even when you’re ignoring the main story.
None of these features guarantees that GTA 6 will be amazing.
But together, they show what Rockstar appears to be aiming for.
Not just a bigger GTA. A more reactive one.
Our Take
I’ve watched enough GTA trailers to know the usual reaction.
“Damn, it looks good.”
After watching the GTA 6 Extended Look more than once, my reaction was different.
I kept thinking about what I’d actually do with all these systems.
I’d probably start a mission, get distracted, steal a car I definitely don’t need, cause a police chase, somehow escape, and then spend the next half hour doing something Rockstar never intended me to do at that moment.
That’s what I want from GTA 6.
Not a game that constantly tells me what to do.
A world that gives me enough freedom to create my own stupid stories.
And from what Rockstar showed in the Extended Look, that’s exactly where GTA 6 could become special.
