GTA 6 Map: Everything We Know About Leonida & Vice City
GTA 6 isn’t just bringing Vice City back. It’s turning Vice City into the center of an entire state.
Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 takes place across Leonida, a fictional state inspired by Florida, with Vice City at its heart. But the world stretches far beyond the city, with tropical islands, rural areas, wetlands, coastal communities and wilderness all forming part of the map.
And then there’s the question everyone keeps asking:
How big is the GTA 6 map?
Rockstar North has described the game’s playable world as roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s map and around three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2. But Rockstar has not published an official square-kilometre figure.
So let’s separate what Rockstar has actually confirmed from developer reports, community mapping and speculation.
Gamer’s Take: At this point, the hardest part of GTA 6 might not be surviving the cops – it’ll be figuring out where the hell you’re going. 😂

What Is the GTA 6 Map?
The GTA 6 map is set across Leonida, Rockstar’s fictional take on Florida.
At its center is Vice City, but this time the city is only one part of a much larger world.
Rockstar’s official media has already showcased several named areas, including Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, Grassrivers and Mount Kalaga National Park.
That’s important because GTA 6 isn’t simply recreating the old Vice City map with better graphics.
Rockstar is building an entire state around the city.
The result should be a world where leaving Vice City doesn’t just mean driving through empty countryside. Different parts of Leonida have their own environments, communities and connections to the story.
The GTA 6 Extended Look also gave us a much closer look at Vice City, the surrounding areas and the activities Rockstar is building into Leonida.
How Big Is the GTA 6 Map?
This is where things get a little complicated.
Rockstar North has reportedly described GTA 6’s playable world as approximately twice the size of GTA 5’s map and around three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2.
Those comparisons give us a good idea of the scale.
But they don’t give us an official measurement.
So, how many km² is GTA 6?
We don’t know yet.
Rockstar hasn’t published an official GTA 6 map size in square kilometres or square miles. Community mapping projects have produced their own estimates, but different projects can arrive at different numbers depending on how they measure land, water and map boundaries.
So if you see an exact number online, treat it as an estimate, not an official Rockstar figure.
For now, the safest answer is:
The GTA 6 map is roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s map, but its exact official area remains unknown.
For the detailed numbers and methodology, see our GTA 6 Map Size guide.
GTA 6 Map vs GTA 5
The simplest comparison looks like this:
| GTA 5 | GTA 6 | |
|---|---|---|
| Main city | Los Santos | Vice City |
| Wider setting | Los Santos & Blaine County | State of Leonida |
| Relative map size | 1× | ~2× |
| Main protagonists | Michael, Franklin & Trevor | Jason & Lucia |
But size isn’t necessarily the most important difference.
GTA 5’s world is built heavily around Los Santos, with Blaine County and its surrounding environments expanding outward from the city.
GTA 6 appears to distribute the world across a broader collection of environments.
You’ll have the massive urban centre of Vice City, but also coastal regions, islands, rural areas, wetlands and natural environments.
The goal isn’t just to make the map bigger. It’s to make more of the map worth exploring.
Vice City Is the Heart of GTA 6
Yes, GTA 6 is set in Vice City.
But this is a modern version of the city rather than a simple recreation of the 1986 setting from Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
Rockstar officially identifies Vice City as part of Leonida, and the city serves as the main urban environment for Jason and Lucia’s story.
The scale is also much larger than before.
Rockstar North’s reported comparisons put Vice City itself at roughly twice the size of Los Santos.
That means Vice City alone should give players an enormous amount of urban space to explore before they even start travelling through the rest of Leonida.
And unlike the original game, Vice City now exists inside a much larger ecosystem.
Confirmed GTA 6 Map Locations
Rockstar hasn’t released a complete labelled map showing every road, neighbourhood and settlement.
However, several major regions have been officially showcased.
Vice City
The main metropolitan centre of Leonida, filled with skyscrapers, beaches, businesses, nightlife and the criminal world surrounding Jason and Lucia.
Leonida Keys
A tropical coastal and island region outside the city. Rockstar also connects the Keys to Jason’s background, saying he has worked for drug runners there.
Port Gellhorn
A separate coastal region with a very different atmosphere from the bright, wealthy side of Vice City. Rockstar has officially showcased the area through its GTA 6 media.
Ambrosia
Another confirmed Leonida location that expands the world beyond Vice City and its immediate surroundings.
Grassrivers
A more natural part of Leonida that highlights the game’s wetlands and rural environments.
Mount Kalaga National Park
A confirmed wilderness area that gives the map another major contrast to Vice City’s dense urban environment.
Together, these locations show that Leonida is designed as a varied state rather than one giant city.

What Is the GTA 6 Map Project?
The GTA 6 Map Project is essentially a community effort to reconstruct Leonida using everything fans can analyse.
That includes:
- Trailers
- Screenshots
- Official artwork
- Road layouts
- Geography
- Waterways
- Buildings
- Leaked material
- Environmental clues
These projects can be useful for understanding the possible shape and scale of Leonida.
But there’s one thing to remember:
The GTA 6 Map Project isn’t an official Rockstar map.
Different mapping projects can also disagree about exact distances and total area, which is another reason not to treat community measurements as definitive.
We’ve covered the mapping community separately in our GTA 6 Map Project guide.
Why GTA 6's Map Could Feel Bigger Than GTA 5
Here’s the part that gets lost when everyone starts arguing about square kilometres.
A bigger map doesn’t automatically mean a better map.
What matters is what Rockstar puts inside it. The GTA 6 hidden details we’ve seen so far also show how Rockstar is using smaller gameplay and environmental systems to make Leonida feel more alive.
GTA 6 appears to be built around a much wider variety of environments. You can move from Vice City’s dense urban streets toward coastal areas, the Keys, rural environments and wilderness without leaving Leonida.
That variety could make the world feel much larger than the raw map measurement suggests.
And that’s what I’m most interested in.
Because if Rockstar fills those areas with the random encounters, characters, activities and environmental details we’ve come to expect from GTA, then the map won’t just be something we cross on the way to the next mission.
It could become the reason we keep playing.
KarmaVerse Verdict: GTA 6's Map Looks Massive - But That's Not the Best Part
The numbers are impressive.
Roughly twice GTA 5. Around three times RDR2’s playable area. A Vice City reportedly twice the size of Los Santos.
But the real test isn’t how many square kilometres Rockstar gives us.
It’s whether Leonida feels alive.
So far, the combination of Vice City, the Keys, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, Grassrivers and Mount Kalaga suggests Rockstar isn’t simply making a larger map.
It’s making a more varied one.
And that’s potentially much more important.
Because let’s be honest: GTA players aren’t going to admire the map size and move on.
We’re going to spend the first few hours ignoring the story, stealing something completely inappropriate and driving into the nearest body of water just to see what happens.
Rockstar gave us an entire state. Good luck getting anything done. 😂
