GTA 6 Wanted Level Mechanics: How Police AI Will Track You
Let’s be honest – GTA 5’s police system could feel like the cops had a sixth sense. Commit a crime in an alley, break line of sight, and somehow the police still seemed to know exactly where you were.
GTA 6 is taking a different approach. The GTA 6 Extended Look gave us our clearest look yet at the new wanted system, including six wanted stars and on-screen indicators showing what the police may know about you – from your appearance and clothes to the weapon involved.
And that changes the escape game completely. Instead of simply driving until the stars disappear, what the police know about you can now matter just as much as where you are. So what do those red tracking icons actually mean, and how can Jason and Lucia lose the cops when the police already have a description?
Gamer take: Can’t even test a rocket launcher without a Vice City NPC keeping notes on my outfit. 😭
Understanding the GTA 6 Wanted Level Mechanics: What the 5 Red Icons Mean
1. The Weapon Icon (Gun)
- What it means: The police have identified the exact firearm or weapon used at the crime scene (either through witnesses, ballistics, or open gunplay).
- The Survival Meta: Walking around with the same rifle out in the open will cause instant suspicion. You will need to holster or swap your weapon loadout to drop this specific tracking marker.
2. The Identity Icon (Profile)
- What it means: Law enforcement has a clear description of your face, facial hair, or overall physical profile.
This connects with the GTA 6 Hidden Details we spotted in Rockstar’s Extended Look, including the possibility that police can identify you through more than just your vehicle. - The Survival Meta: This is where customization impacts gameplay. To clear this icon, you will actively need to put on sunglasses, wear a baseball cap, or find a safehouse to completely change your hairstyle.
3. The Clothes Icon (Hanger)
- What it means: Eyewitnesses or first responders have logged the exact color and style of the outfit you are wearing.
- The Survival Meta: Running into a local clothing store or swapping outfits using the gear stored in your vehicle’s trunk becomes a vital mechanic to break the line of sight.
4. The Couple Icon (Two Silhouettes)
- What it means: Because GTA 6 revolves around a dynamic duo, committing a crime together triggers this icon. The police dispatch explicitly alerts all units to look for a male and female couple working together.
- The Survival Meta: This is the ultimate tactical game-changer. To shake off maximum heat, Jason and Lucia will have to split up during a chase. Forcing the AI to divide its patrol resources allows one character to draw the heat while the other slips away with the loot.
5. The CCTV Icon (Security Camera)
- What it means: You crossed paths with a functional traffic camera, an ATM scanner, or a store security system during your escape.
- The Survival Meta: As long as this icon is active, entering high-density intersections will instantly refresh your wanted stars. You must stick to dark back-alleys, dirt roads, or unmonitored rural areas to let the camera feed data expire.
Advanced Police AI: Crucial GTA 6 Wanted Level Mechanics You Need to Master
- Perimeter Blocks: Police vehicles will set up strategic roadblocks to seal off neighboring streets, clearing out civilian traffic to corner you.
- Red Search Radii: If you completely break line of sight, the police will heavily patrol a red circle on your mini-map, using K9 units and ground searches to actively check bushes and alleyways.
